xceed‘Fabulous’ Phil Carman
Phil Carman was born in Edenhope, 4th September 1966. Although he was in the Collingwood
“zone” and did some training with Collingwood, he began his career with Norwood in SA. The
Magpies protested and he stood out of football for 2 years before being able to continue with
Norwood. He became famous for his fabulous play & white boots.
In ’75 he joined the Magpies and started his VFL career 
in brilliant fashion. In his first year he won the Copeland Trophy (Collingwood Best & Fairest) and polled 3 short of the winner of the Brownlow, after missing the last 8 games with a broken foot.
A Collingwood “cult figure” words that have been used to describe him are – flamboyant, exasperating, dynamic, brilliant, fiery, controversial, colorful, mercurial. He perhaps should have become one of the all time greats of the game but bad luck, poor discipline, suspensions and injury got in the way.
After 68 games at Collingwood he played for Melbourne, Essendon &
North Melbourne to play 100 AFL/ VFL games in total.
From 1995 to 2001 Phil coached Sturt in SA. After the previous 6 Wooden Spoons (’89-’94), he
re-established the club as a finals contender resulting in the minor premiership in 1998, losing a
close Grand Final to Port Adelaide.
